Governess/Tutor for Private Family

A private family in Chelsea, London is seeking an exceptional private family Tutor and Governor/Governess to take a leading role in the academic education, personal development, and character formation of four school-aged children. The family is looking for a highly educated, experienced, and emotionally intelligent professional who can provide structure and continuity alongside their formal education. This is an excellent opportunity for an educator who enjoys working with children at different developmental stages and can balance academic achievement with manners, discipline, emotional development, independence, and personal responsibility.

The successful candidate will provide tailored one-to-one and small-group tutoring, homework and study supervision, academic enrichment, and educational planning based on each child’s age, personality, learning style, and academic needs. The role will reinforce the school curriculum while identifying learning gaps, extending academically strong children, strengthening literacy and numeracy, encouraging reading and intellectual curiosity, and developing critical thinking and effective study habits. The tutor will also support school projects, presentations, assignments, academic transitions, and future milestones while creating additional learning opportunities beyond the classroom and encouraging children to become independent, confident, and motivated learners.

Beyond academics, the position has a strong focus on character and personal development. The candidate will build trusting relationships with each child while encouraging resilience, emotional intelligence, self-discipline, confidence, accountability, and positive behavior. They will establish calm and consistent boundaries, promote good manners and respectful communication, help children manage frustration and resolve conflicts, and support healthy sibling relationships. The role also includes creating productive after-school routines, organizing homework and extracurricular commitments, monitoring progress, preparing educational materials, maintaining appropriate records, and providing parents with regular updates. With parental approval, the tutor may also communicate with teachers, tutors, school staff, coaches, educational consultants, and other household professionals to ensure a coordinated approach.

The ideal candidate will have a university degree or equivalent, a recognized teaching qualification and/or substantial private tutoring experience, and extensive experience working with children approximately ages 7–12, including multiple children at different developmental stages. Experience teaching English and Mathematics, positive behavior management, and familiarity with the UK education system are essential, while independent-school experience is advantageous. Additional strengths include preparation for 7+, 8+, 11+, Common Entrance, or independent-school examinations; knowledge of London independent schools; child-development or educational psychology experience; additional languages; experience supporting varied learning needs; and coordination with schools, tutors, nannies, and private household staff.

Excellent English communication, professional references, an Enhanced DBS or willingness to obtain one, and the legal right to work in the UK are required. Flexibility to travel with the family during school holidays may also be beneficial. The family is seeking a long-term, trusted role model who can work collaboratively with the parents while taking genuine ownership of the children’s educational and personal development. The yearly salary for this position is 75,000 GBP per year, which is roughly equivalent to $100,000 USD.
