As an academic tutor, I am aware that my role exceeds beyond the minimum criteria of tutoring students in the academic areas of general math and algebra. With a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, I am aware that academic success of students starts with fulfilling their physical, but most importantly, emotional needs. The reason that many students struggle in the field of mathematics is not because they are not capable of learning the material, but because they do not believe they possess the skills needed to master the course. This means that their teacher to play the role of not only an instructor but also a mentor, providing them with the self-assurance in their abilities needed to help them strive with perseverance to reach their academic goals.
Unfortunately, it was not until I reached secondary education, obtaining my undergraduate education at Spelman College, that I gained the opportunity of having a mentor. Through this experience, I learned how valuable it was to have someone to not only look up to, but to converse with, regarding career goals and aspirations and the steps/routes needed to take to accomplish one’s goals. I am interested in being a private tutor because I want to teach as well as mentor the students I service; building close relationships with them giving them the confidence they need to reach their full potential and ultimate success. Through trusting me to educate your child, I will be able to galvanize students into taking constructive steps towards their career goals, while providing them with the motivation to aspire to reach their dreams.
