Certified Teacher and Engineer
- Tutoring Physics, Maths, and other Sciences

I am a retired teacher tutoring maths and sciences. I have a Massachusetts teaching certificate; 10 years experience teaching high school physics, astronomy, and chemistry; 22 years experience designing computer hardware and networking equipment; and 10 years experience as a construction electrician. Teaching is my 3rd career. After two other careers and 30 years prior work experience, I came to teaching as an avocation as well as a vocation.

I enjoy getting to know students so that I can tailor my teaching to each of their needs and strengths. When tutoring I am able to frame each question to lead to the understanding of a concept. There is a great satisfaction when I see that 'aha' moment and know we can move on.

I like to show students how mathematics is both a tool and a language. Mathematics is a tool for scientist to solve problems using data from experiments, and to predict future results and events. I show them how to apply their mathematics principles including Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics, and Calculus to help in solving their science problems. I teach that mathematics is also a language, the language of science; and it has a syntax and semantics just as any natural language does. Mathematics is the language scientists use to describe the universe - Mathematics is the language of science because unlike natural human languages, mathematics is precise and exact.

I have taught Physics, Chemistry, Physical Science, Astronomy, and IPS for high school freshmen, juniors, and seniors at the honors, college, and general levels: and I have also been Assistant Professor of Physics on the adjunct faculty of a nearby university. I like helping my students truly understand their subjects. I believe their success depends on their understanding of the material; not on memorization and a calculator, or reading then reciting an answer. With their own true understanding of the concepts, quiz questions and problems become simpler; and as a bonus the knowledge can be used in other courses and in life. When they really understand the wonderful things they can do - that is when they want to know more. If you are interested in understanding your Physics, Science, and Maths as opposed to just solving problems, then I am the tutor for you.

Résumé
-------------
I have a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) and a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). I have studied a wide variety of mathematics and science subjects both during my preparation for teaching, and before that in preparation for my earlier career as an electrical engineer. In addition I have completed post-graduate work in physics, science, mathematics, engineering, computers, and education; including courses on Teaching AP Physics and in the Mathematical Modeling Method for Teaching Physics.

I was an electrical engineer designing computer hardware for 20 years before becoming a teacher. Electrical Engineering is a study of physics, especially Electro-Magnetics, and the mathematics required to describe electrical systems and to solve EE problems. I have done advanced work in both physics and mathematics; and in my engineering work I applied my knowledge of mathematics and science in the solution of problems.

I originally started out to be a Bio-Medical Engineer and began my studies in a dual-degree program at UConn for a BSEE and BA in Biology. I finished my baccalauréate at the University of Hartford in a BSEE program concentrating in computer systems and hardware design. Due to this I have studied a wide variety of subjects. In addition to my major in Electrical Engineering I have major concentrations in Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Engineering; and minors in Chemistry, and Biology.

I was an electrician in construction for 10 years while attending college part-time. I then worked for 20 years at Raytheon, Prime Computer, and Digital Computer (DEC) designing computer systems, CPUs, memory, and networking hardware. I have two U.S. and related foreign patents for computer design. After my work in the computer industry is when I completed my MAT in Physics and became a teacher.

[[ Some of the subjects I tutor are known by different names so this is included for search engines:
Physics, AP Physics, Physics 1, Physics 2, Physics C, Calculus, Calc, Trigonometry, Trig, Precalculus, Pre Calculus, Pre-calculus, Precalc, Pre-Calc, Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra I, Algebra 2, Algebra II ]]
