My name is Julie Newman Rivkin. I am currently a Kindergarten classroom teacher in the New York City Department of Education, where I recently received tenure in District 2. It is my seventh year of teaching, and I have taught in grades Kindergarten through Third, in both general education and integrated special education classrooms. For my undergraduate education, I had the opportunity to attend The University of Maryland, where I received a B.S. in Elementary Education in 2016. I then received my Masters of Education in Mathematics Curriculum and Instruction in Spring 2017, and my advanced certificate in teaching English as a Second Language in Fall 2018. I have always taught in schools with a high ESL population, and I love working with families and students to help build equity around education. In my classroom, I strive to incorporate scaffolding surrounding language, include culture in my teaching, and provide parent support and inclusiveness around academics.
While I love being a classroom teacher, small group and individual instruction has always been my passion. I have been a private teacher since 2016, and I have taught students ages 3 to 12. My focus as a private educator is on individualized child development and achievement. I absolutely love working with my students and their families to create personalized curriculums and goals, developing fun, engaging and hands-on lessons where students can be leaders of their own learning, and creating a bond with the student and family. I currently have availability after school hours. I am also in search of a full-time homeschool position!
My teaching philosophy is rooted in child development and individuality. I strive to combine my experience and training in excellent teaching curriculums, with my knowledge of how children learn, progress, and develop. I believe that childhood learning should be well-rounded and encompass social-emotional learning, speech and language expansion, fine motor development, problem solving, persistence, creative expression, and critical thinking (and, of course, it should be fun!). This is in addition to the academic growth gained by learning phonemic and phonological awareness, foundational mathematics, beginning writing skills, mathematics fundamentals, and more.
I am a strong believer that education is not “one-size-fits-all,” and I am seeking an opportunity to tailor education to your individual child’s needs. I look forward to working with you!
