Governess/Private Teacher (Early Childhood)

A private family in New York is seeking an experienced and dedicated Governess to create and lead an ongoing educational enrichment program for their two 4-year-old twin boys. This is a full-time, permanent, live-out position within a warm but structured household that follows clear written policies and expectations. The Governess will take primary responsibility for curriculum planning, afternoon educational activities, and managing the children’s after-school routine while providing a consistent, engaging, and nurturing environment.

The Governess will develop individualized enrichment plans covering literacy, mathematics, a second language, arts, science, and cultural education, while aligning activities with the children’s school curriculum and the family’s educational goals. Afternoons may include guided reading, hands-on projects, music and creative activities, and museum or cultural outings. The Governess will prepare a weekly curriculum update outlining completed activities and upcoming plans, helping the parents stay informed about the children’s educational progress and experiences.

In addition to educational responsibilities, the Governess will handle school pickups, ensure smooth transitions between school, extracurricular activities, and home, and accompany the children to scheduled activities while maintaining safety, structure, and positive routines. The role also includes preparing and serving after-school meals and following the family’s established household policies consistently. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellent professionalism, discretion, confidentiality, reliability, and a genuine interest in working within a structured household environment. Willingness to travel with the family as needed is required, while a second language such as Spanish, Mandarin, or French is strongly preferred.

Candidates should have a degree in education, child development, or a related field, or an equivalent qualification such as teaching certification or Montessori training, along with at least five years of experience working with children in a teaching, tutoring, or governess capacity and demonstrated success designing and delivering curriculum. A driver’s license and clean driving record are advantageous but not required.

The schedule is Monday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with some flexibility. Compensation is $150,000 annually, based on a 40-hour week and paid on the books, plus bonuses. Benefits include an $800 monthly health insurance stipend, five personal/sick days + federal holidays off, 10 vacation days annually, and an unlimited MetroCard.
