Learning Specialist for Upper School (Grades 9–12)

Our student-focused upper school is seeking an experienced learning specialist to join our support programs. This is a full-time, in-person immediate opportunity with a salary range of $80,000–$90,000 per year. The ideal candidate will support high school students with learning differences as they develop the academic and organizational skills needed for success in school and preparation for college. Students may have language processing challenges, specific learning disabilities, executive functioning difficulties, or other cognitive differences that affect their learning.

The learning specialist will provide small-group literacy instruction to strengthen students’ reading and writing abilities and teach executive functioning strategies in groups of approximately 2–4 students. Responsibilities also include teaching cognitive and academic strategies, collaborating with classroom teachers to help students apply these skills across settings, and providing individualized or small-group academic support with papers, projects, assignments, and exam preparation. The specialist will also provide approved accommodations, such as extended time, readers, and scribes, in accordance with students’ IEPs or Section 504 Plans.

The specialist will work closely with other staff and programs to establish individualized goals based on each student’s strengths and areas for growth in reading and writing. The role includes monitoring student progress and evaluating the effectiveness of interventions, participating in student support and faculty meetings, and serving as a mentor to selected students. The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of learning disabilities, excellent relationship-building and classroom management skills, and experience implementing research-based reading and writing interventions. Familiarity with Wilson, Orton-Gillingham, or PAF is preferred, while experience teaching executive functioning strategies is a plus.

Candidates should hold a Master’s degree in Education preferably with a focus in special education, and ideally possess or be eligible for New York State Special Education certification for Grades 7–12, or a related certification. Prior classroom teaching experience with students with learning differences is required, along with experience using evidence-based instructional strategies. This position follows the academic calendar and requires a Monday–Friday schedule from 8:00am to 3:30pm, with faculty meetings on Wednesday afternoons. Occasional evening commitments, such as Back to School Night or parent-teacher meetings, may be required and will be scheduled in advance.
