Description: This subject forms the foundation for the tourism courses at this university, and will present to you the underlying themes and concepts that you will study in more detail in further courses. Tourism is an exciting and very interesting field to study. As you progress through the course materials, you will find an enormous body of academic literature on the subject as well as abundant information available though the media and the tourism industry.

There are numerous ways to approach the study of tourism. This course primarily takes a business (marketing and management) approach to the study of tourist destinations, products and impacts. I hope you enjoy your studies and that it inspires you to undertake further courses in tourism, not only to expand your knowledge and understanding of tourism, but as an enjoyable and interesting subject to study and develop your career options.

This course is important to tourism and hospitality students in the first instance, but also highly valuable for students in education, business and the arts who are interested in acquiring a better understanding of the nature of tourism in the world today.

In particular, this course will highlight the importance of a systematic approach to the study of tourism covering tourist types and behaviour, the role of places in tourists’ itineraries and their experiences, environmental impacts, sustainability and the concept of eco-tourism, cultural impacts and authenticity, the impact of events and conferences, and the structure of tourism as an industry.
